What's an Aarbok?
|
|
An aarbok is a
"yearbook" -- a book or magazine which is published each year. Beginning
in 1909, Trønderlag of America
published an aarbok every year or two until the mid-1930s. A few were
published in later years. Beginning in 2005, Trønderlag re-established the
Aarbok tradition. This was the first the lag published in 20 years.
The Aarbok helps us maintain a history of Trønderlag and allows us to share that
history with lag members and others.
Each aarbok will
include historical data about the lag that we can glean from the
historical records we are still collecting. A brief summary of the
prior stevne will be included, along with the group photo. In addition, we
would especially like the aarbok to include biographies and photos of the
emigrant ancestors of our lag members. Only a few of our Tronder
ancestors have been documented in past Trønderlag yearbooks. Thousands of
people emigrated from Nord- and Sør-Trøndelag. Digitalarkivet lists
193,230 people who emigrated from Trondheim from 1867-1930. Not all of
these were from Trøndelag and not all Tronders left from Trondheim. However, we would like to document as many of the emigrant Tronders as
possible in future Aarboks. |

How can you get
involved in future Aarboks?
|
 |
Immigrant Biographies/Histories:
Write about your family's Trønder immigrant(s) and their descendants. Tell
us their story. Where did they come from? Why did they emigrate? What
hardships did they face? How did they overcome those obstacles? If
you don't wish to write the biography yourself, please contact the
committee for assistance. If you are the immigrant, please tell us your
story. Please include a photo of your immigrant and/or their family
if possible. That makes for a more interesting story.
|
 |
Immigrant Letters: Translated letters to or from the immigrants.
|
 |
Stevne Summary: Write a very brief summary of any of the activities
or events you attended at the stevne. Or submit any of the photos
you took during the stevne

- Biography limit of 1000 words or less (2 typed pages).
- Verify the spellings of all names and places. Please do NOT
type names in all caps.
- Check the accuracy of the dates included.
- Spell out the month in dates for clarity (not 4/9/85, but instead 4
September 1885)
- Be specific about surnames used in America and Norway (for the
immigrant and his/her children)
- At the top of the biography, list (1) American name, then (2) their
Norwegian name(s) and birthplace.
- Text should be submitted in a word processing file, if possible, via
email. Send your photographs via regular mail to the committee (see

Photographs:
- Submit only one photo per biography please. If you have two good
ones and can't decide, send both and if we can't fit both, we'll choose
the one to use.
- Submit original photos for us to scan (preferred) or good quality
copies on photographic paper (such as you might get from copying
an original photo on a Kodak machine at Walgreen's or Osco). We will return all originals.
- No photos copied onto copy/xerox paper.
- No photos incorporated into word processing files.
- No itty bitty photos or pieces cut from photos -- send the whole
photo.
- No low resolution scans will be accepted -- all photos must be scanned at
300 dpi in
color (tif format please). However, we prefer to do the scans for better
quality control.
- Please enclose a caption for your photo, naming the people pictured.
Do NOT write on the photo itself please. We would have to publish
it with your writing still on it - we cannot remove ink/writing from a
photo before scanning it.
